Makis Solomos was born in 1962 in Athens. He is living in Paris since 1980. After
studying composition with Yoshihisa Taira and Sergio Ortega, he studied musicology
in Université Paris 4. He is now maitre de conférences habilite at Universite
Montpellier 3 and membre junior at Institut Universitaire de France. His research
domains are:
1. Xenakis’ music: PhD on the notion of “sonority” (Pour une approche historique
de l’emergence du phenomene du son, Universite Paris 4, 1993, 675 p.), many articles
that deal with new questions, a book (Iannis Xenakis, Mercues, PO Editions, 1996;
updated in 2004), many conferences in various countries. He also published a
detailed commented bibliography of writings of/on Xenakis and the first Greek
edition of Xenakis’ writings (Keimena peri moussikis kai architektonikis, Athens,
Psychogios, 2001), and he organized (with the Cdmc and Radio France, Paris) in
1998 the first international symposium on Xenakis (proceedings: Présences de
/ Presences of Iannis Xenakis, Paris, Cdmc, 2001). Now, in collaboration with
Beno”t Gibson and Sharon Kanach, he is preparing a critical edition of Xenakis’
writings (in nine volumes) and is co-organising the second international symposium
on Xenakis (Athens, May 2005).
2. Researches on recent music, with aesthetical questions from Adorno to globalization
and through technologies, from Wagner to John Zorn and through Webern, Varese,
Boulez, spectral music, electronic popular music, etc.: he published many articles
and the book Formel / Informel (with Antonia Soulez and Horacio Soulez: Paris,
l’Harmattan, 2003); he edited Musique contemporaine. Positions actuelles en Espagne
et en France / Música contemporánea. Posiciones actuales en Espa–a y Francia
(with Jorge Fernández Guerra: Doce Notas Preliminares n°1, Madrid, 1997), L’espace
: musique-philosophie (with Jean-Marc Chouvel: Paris, l’Harmattan, 1998), Le
« Savant » et le « Populaire » (Musurgia vol. IX n°1, 2002), La métaphore lumineuse.
Xenakis-Grisey (Paris, l’Harmattan, 2003), Musiques, arts, technologies. Pour
une approche critique / Music, arts and technologies. Towards a critical approach
/ Musicas, artes y tecnologías. Por una aproximacion critica (with Roberto Barbanti
et Carmen Pardo: Paris, l’Harmattan, 2004). He collaborates with Ensemble Aleph
for the International Forum for Young Composers. He is preparing a book on the
emergence of sound, De la musique au son. Notes pour une histoire multiple de
la musique du 20e siecle, and is editing a book on the music of Horacio Vaggione.
