1. The Institute consists of in-class presentations, individual meetings, workshops and concerts. Resident-lectors and resident-students work together in a community-oriented environment and interact in an informal and open-ended fashion. They consult, discuss and analyze their compositions and problems of contemporary music in general, and gain experience by sharing their ideas with their colleagues. Focus groups may form spontaneously as the Institute's work unfolds. There is a steady and ongoing interaction between all of the participants. The work focuses on, but is not limited to, compositions for orchestra.
2. Additional lectures and presentations by guests are scheduled throughout the Institute.
3. The Janacek Philharmonic, Ostravská banda (chamber orchestra), other
ensembles
and
soloists
perform reading/workshops as well as concerts.Residents have the opportunity
to observe
the workings of
a
symphony orchestra as it grapples with the complexity of performing new and often
experimental works. The resident-students may potentially work directly with
the orchestra and conduct their own compositions.
4. The closing six days of the Institute are devoted to a series of public performances, organized and presented as the Ostrava Days Festival. The program of the festival consists of works by OD participants, lectors, guests and students, as well as other new music compositions.
5. The facility of the Janacek Conservatory Ostrava is available to the OD Institute (the building opened in 1996 and is one of the best such facilities in Europe). Besides having 70 well-equipped classrooms and practice rooms, it also contains a medium-size concert hall (which seats 400), a recording studio, four dance studios, drama studios and rehearsal space for an orchestra.
Ostrava Days Institute also uses the facility of the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra; its rehearsal spaces as well as the JPO Philharmonic Hall, which has flexible seating and is large enough to accommodate concerts of programs for three orchestras.
